Social Anxiety Disorder

How Phobias Work | The Cure | Other Treatments | Tools

Social Phobia or Social Anxiety is a major problem. Social phobia is an anxiety disorder, it's more than just shyness or nervousness around people. A powerful fear of interpersonal contact, social phobia can interfere with a person's life and health.

Dr. Richard G. Heimberg of Temple University notes that people with social phobia experience many negative life problems as a result of their social anxiety:

1. they are less likely to marry than others

2.  they have additional occupational difficulties

3.  they may not be able to function academically and finish school

4.  they report a higher incidence rate for substance abuse, and

5.  depression and suicidal ideation seem to be higher than average.

Often social phobia is paired with other anxiety disorders and can co-exist with self-consciousness, fear of public speaking, low self-esteem and depression.

Social anxiety and social phobia have been shown to be affected positively by drug treatments. If drug treatment seems like a good first option to you consult your doctor or psychiatrist.

Social anxiety can sometimes be accompanied by excessive blushing and worries about being judged as well as the typical phobia symptoms; shortness of breath, increased sweatiness or clamminess of the hands, nausea, rapid heartbeat, inability to speak etc. These symptoms vary from person to person.

These symptoms are all subconscious responses - that is, they'd be very difficult to fake or reproduce at will. For this reason conscious insight or "talk therapy" is often ineffective against social phobia.

The solution is to train the subconscious mind how to act differently. Get The Phobia Self-Help System to learn how.
